 Brian Mantel Club Professional Coach
Profile

Brian Mantel began facilitating junior badminton over thirty years ago,
running the junior section of his own
club whilst still a junior himself. After helping at another junior club, Brian took his first coaching qualification in 1984. Obtaining an upgrade in the minimum
time allowed, Brian became a full time professional coach in 1985.

Over the last twenty-six years Brian
has acquired a wealth of experience
working with players of all ages and
standards, from junior beginners to
senior internationals. This included
completing a coaching project for
his Advanced Award in 1992, using
Welsh international (and Cheshire
Singles Champion) John Murtagh
as his subject. Brian spent several
years working with the Stockport
junior squads, coached the Wiltshire
U12, U14 and U16 squads for three
years and spent two years assisting
with the coaching of the England
U14 Squad.

Brian's extensive coaching
experience has included working
with adult beginners and club
players, taking Brian all over the
country and as far afield as
Denmark, often on behalf of
sponsors, including Yamaha,
Pro-Kennex, and, currently, Prince.
Few coaches can match the
diversity of Brian's experience,
which ranges from working with
beginners who cannot hit the shuttle
to top-class players including three-
times National Champion Colin
Haughton and former England No3
Nathan Rice, whom he helped as a
junior and senior international,
including at the English Nationals
(Feb. 07 & 08).

Brian was invited by the Director of
Coaching to become a Badminton
England Tutor/Assessor in 1992,
and trained coaches for many
years. He has worked extensively
with Senior Coach, All England
winner and Commonwealth Games
gold medallist Roger Mills. This
coaching relationship has enabled
Brian to work with many top class
players, and to benefit from the vast
experience and knowledge of,
arguably, the best coach in the
game. Roger and Brian are
currently collaborating on a number
of writing projects.

Current Activities

In Nov. 2010 Brian Mantel was
appointed as club Professional
Coach by White Horse Badminton
Club. He ran the highly successful
Wootton Bassett Junior Badminton
Club (Swindon Youth League
Champions 2007) for 12 years,
coaching the teams. Brian has also
coached at Malmesbury JBC, and
School, as well as working with
individual pupils including Lisa
Turner, who became the youngest
ever (15) winner of a senior
Wiltshire title when she won the
Women's Singles in Oct 2006,
retaining her title in 2007, 2008,
2009 and 2010.
Brian continues to collaborate with
Roger Mills, assisting with the
coaching of elite junior players. He
continues to coach at Wootton
Bassett JBC, in addition to running
events and courses for the Lilm Kiln
Centre. One of his individual pupils
won the Wiltshire U17 Doubles title
last season, whilst two former pupils
(Lisa Turner and Chris Williams) are
currently playing for Loughborough
University.
