Eleven fire engines were
called to the scene on Saturday after a fire started in the
central part of the building near the sauna.
By mid afternoon the fire was
under control and fire officers were clearing the smoke trapped
in the building.
It is not thought the fire was
started deliberately and no one was injured.
Councillor Peter Doyle,
chairman of Wootton Bassett & Cricklade Area Board praised DC
Leisure Services staff for their operation of emergency
procedures in ensuring staff and customers were safely evacuated
from the Lime Kiln Leisure Centre following the fire incident on
Saturday 18 December.
Coun Doyle received a full
briefing from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service following a tour
of the fire damaged premises on Sunday morning. He was
accompanied by Councillor Chris Wannell from Wootton Bassett
Town Council, who is an ex-fireman.
Coun Doyle said he wants to
reassure the community that Wiltshire Council will work with DC
Leisure Services to get the Lime Kiln Centre back into operation
as soon as possible, following a full inspection and assessment
of necessary repairs.
The Cabinet Member for Leisure
Services at Wiltshire Council, Coun Stuart Wheeler and Robin
Townsend, head of leisure services, have been kept fully
informed about the incident.
Mr Townsend will be visiting
the Centre on Monday morning and having discussions with DC
Leisure to arrange a detailed assessment of the fire damage.
Once a detailed report is available a further public update will
be issued.
The centre has been threatened
with closure by Wiltshire Council unless a community group can
be formed to run it by 2015.
